The UK authorities has added 11 new countries to its travel warning list regarding the risks of toxic alcohol toxicity from adulterated spirits.

The revised travel guidance now includes Bangladesh, India, Iran, Jordan, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Morocco, Nepal, Papua New Guinea, and Rwanda due to reports of "a global increase in the number of reported cases" of toxic alcohol toxicity.

Only recently, the government had already added Ecuador, Japan, Kenya, Mexico, Nigeria, Peru, Russia, and Uganda to the standing register, in response to multiple notable cases including the fatal demise of 6 tourists in Laos in 2024.

Tourists are being warned that even minimal doses of industrial alcohol can result in permanent eye damage or death within 12–48 hours.

What is Methanol and In what way is it Utilized?

Toxic alcohol is a poisonous substance typically employed in antifreeze, car cleaning liquid, and thinner. This chemical is not designed for drinking.

Although it is naturally produced during the manufacture of alcoholic drinks, reputable manufacturers reduce it to low, safe levels for ingestion through the refining procedure.

Yet in some countries, it is illegally mixed into beverages to reduce expenses, and since it is flavorless and smell-free, it is extremely challenging to notice.

Government Advice for Travellers

Government official a senior official emphasized that each tourist should recognize the indicators of industrial alcohol poisoning.

"If you're consuming alcohol abroad, opt for reputable establishments and avoid unlicensed drinks or free shots," the minister said.

"If something feels off, for example a fatigue that's way worse than usual or sight issues – get medical help immediately."
