🔗 Share this article ‘It seems like sorcery’: is light therapy truly capable of improving your skin, whitening your teeth, and strengthening your joints? Light-based treatment is definitely experiencing a wave of attention. Consumers can purchase glowing gadgets designed to address skin conditions and wrinkles as well as aching tissues and gum disease, recently introduced is a dental hygiene device equipped with tiny red LEDs, marketed by the company as “a major advance in at-home oral care.” Internationally, the sector valued at $1bn last year is expected to increase to $1.8bn within the next decade. Options include full-body infrared sauna sessions, which use infrared light to warm the body directly, the infrared radiation heats your body itself. According to its devotees, it’s like bathing in one of those LED-lit beauty masks, stimulating skin elasticity, easing muscle tension, alleviating inflammatory responses and long-term ailments and potentially guarding against cognitive decline. Research and Reservations “It appears somewhat mystical,” observes a Durham University professor, who has researched light therapy for two decades. Naturally, we know light influences biological functions. Our bodies produce vitamin D through sun exposure, needed for bone health, immunity, muscles and more. Light exposure controls our sleep-wake cycles, additionally, stimulating neurotransmitter and hormone production during daytime, and preparing the body for rest as darkness falls. Daylight-simulating devices are a common remedy for people with seasonal affective disorder (Sad) to elevate spirits during colder months. So there’s no doubt we need light energy to function well. Types of Light Therapy Although mood lamps generally utilize blue-spectrum frequencies, most other light therapy devices deploy red or infrared light. In serious clinical research, including research on infrared’s impact on neural cells, determining the precise frequency is essential. Light is a form of electromagnetic radiation, spanning from low-energy radio waves to the highest-energy (gamma waves). Therapeutic light application employs mid-spectrum wavelengths, including invisible ultraviolet radiation, then the visible spectrum we perceive as colors and then infrared (which we can see with night-vision goggles). Ultraviolet treatment has been employed by skin specialists for decades to treat chronic skin conditions such as eczema, psoriasis and vitiligo. It affects cellular immune responses, “and reduces inflammatory processes,” notes a skin specialist. “Substantial research supports light therapy.” UVA goes deeper into the skin than UVB, in contrast to LEDs in commercial products (which generally deliver red, infrared or blue light) “generally affect surface layers.” Safety Considerations and Medical Oversight Potential UVB consequences, such as burning or tanning, are well known but in medical devices the light is delivered in a “narrow-band” form – signifying focused frequency bands – that reduces potential hazards. “Therapy is overseen by qualified practitioners, thus exposure is controlled,” notes the specialist. And crucially, the light sources are adjusted by technical experts, “to ensure that the wavelength that’s being delivered is fit for purpose – different from beauty salons, where regulations may be lax, and wavelength accuracy isn’t verified.” Commercial Products and Research Limitations Colored light diodes, he says, “aren’t typically employed clinically, though they might benefit some issues.” Red wavelength therapy, proponents claim, help boost blood circulation, oxygen utilization and skin cell regeneration, and stimulate collagen production – an important goal for anti-aging. “Research exists,” states the dermatologist. “Although it’s not strong.” Regardless, amid the sea of devices now available, “we’re uncertain whether commercial devices replicate research conditions. We don’t know the duration, ideal distance from skin surface, whether or not that will increase the risk versus the benefit. Many uncertainties remain.” Specific Applications and Professional Perspectives Early blue-light applications focused on skin microbes, a microbe associated with acne. The evidence for its efficacy isn’t strong enough for it to be routinely prescribed by doctors – despite the fact that, says Ho, “it’s often seen in medical spas or aesthetics practices.” Some of his patients use it as part of their routine, he says, however for consumer products, “we just tell them to try it carefully and to make sure it has been assessed for safety. Unless it’s a medical device, oversight remains ambiguous.” Advanced Research and Cellular Mechanisms Meanwhile, in advanced research areas, scientists have been studying cerebral tissue, identifying a number of ways in which infrared can boost cellular health. “Nearly every test with precise light frequencies demonstrated advantageous outcomes,” he says. It is partly these many and varied positive effects on cellular health that have driven skepticism about light therapy – that claims seem exaggerated. However, scientific investigation has altered his perspective. Chazot mostly works on developing drug treatments for neurodegenerative diseases, but over 20 years ago, a GP who was developing an antiviral light treatment for cold sores sought his expertise as a biologist. “He developed equipment for cellular and insect experiments,” he says. “I remained doubtful. This particular frequency was around 1070 nanometers, which most thought had no biological effect.” The advantage it possessed, however, was that it travelled through water easily, allowing substantial bodily penetration. Mitochondrial Effects and Brain Health Growing data suggested infrared influenced energy-producing organelles. These organelles generate cellular energy, creating power for cellular operations. “All human cells contain mitochondria, including the brain,” explains the neuroscientist, who, as a neuroscientist, decided to focus the research on brain cells. “Research confirms improved brain blood flow with phototherapy, which is consistently beneficial.” Using 1070nm wavelength, cellular power plants create limited oxidative molecules. In limited quantities these molecules, says Chazot, “stimulates so-called chaperone proteins which look after your mitochondria, preserve cell function and eliminate damaged proteins.” Such mechanisms indicate hope for cognitive disorders: oxidative protection, inflammation reduction, and waste removal – autophagy being the process the cell uses to clear unwanted damaging proteins. Present Investigation Status and Expert Assessments Upon examining current studies on light therapy for dementia, he says, about 400 people were taking part in four studies, comprising his early research projects
