China's Ice Dancers Under Investigation After Holding Prop Weapon during Event

The International Skating Union have launched an investigation following a pair of Chinese figure skaters were seen with an object resembling a toy ballistic missile at an international skating competition.

Television footage captured the skaters sitting alongside a sizable prop in the form of a missile marked “DF-61” as they awaited their scores in the “kiss and cry” area during the event.

The DF-61 is a recently introduced China-produced land-based intercontinental ballistic missile capable of carrying nuclear weapons, which was unveiled at a military parade recently.

Officials have acknowledged of an unsuitable plush item seems to have been one of the objects thrown on to the rink by audience members after a routine during the competition,” the organization stated via a release.

The item was then handled by the skaters who had just performed. We apologizes for this occurrence and will investigate further.”

Ren and Xing placed in eighth place of 10 pairs during the ice dancing competition, which was won by the American pair from the US.
